Cleaned up camp snacks

Hello Reader,

I hope you are enjoying your summer!

You and I have already talked about metabolism, and its such a common topic over here that I've made it the theme of the month.

Summer can be especially hard on the metabolism - long days, drinks in the sun, and snacks around the fire at camp. I hear this.

Some hacks -

1 - if you're buying chips to snack on try to find some with olive oil or avocado oil to avoid the inflammatory effect of those hydrogenated vegetable oils in most brands. Superstore has a large variety of hardbite brand, and kelly's nutrition has some covered bridge brand options.

2 - Beer, ciders and coolers are metabolism killers! They have such a high content of net carbohydrates. If having a drink on the dock is a summer pleasure, consider swapping for a standard 1oz of liquor with sparkling water. You can even try adding an electrolyte packet for some flavor and helps prevent dehydration.

The trick is always just to move towards the lesser of two evils, its never perfect anyways :)

One more thing! Have you cast your vote for naturopaths in the annual Community Votes Campaign? Metabolic health is the biggest danger to our community's health and its most of what I do here, so if I have helped you in any way, please vote and help me to create more meaningful change in the health of our community. Some more metabolic highlights are below!

Diet Shapes Immune Function in Just 2 Weeks

Researchers in Tanzania found that diet changes can directly impact inflammation and immune function.

  • Those who switched to a Western diet (think processed foods) had more inflammation and weaker immune responses.
  • Those who ate a traditional African diet (think whole foods) or added a fermented banana drink showed reduced inflammation.

These changes were seen after only 2 weeks, and the benefits lasted for several weeks later.

This is powerful proof that our bodies respond quickly to what we eat!

Metabolism Affects More than Weight

“Metabolism” is not just about weight.

It’s the sum of all the chemical reactions in your body!

This means your metabolism also affects:

  • Blood sugar (whether you spike and crash or stay steady)
  • Energy (whether you hit a wall at 3pm or feel good all day)
  • Brain function (the brain uses 20% of the body’s energy)
  • Hormone balance, inflammation, and even sleep

So even if weight loss isn’t your goal, supporting a healthy metabolism is still essential for how you feel every day.

Health Tip

Walking After Meals Supports Metabolism

Walking after meals helps to support digestion, improve insulin sensitivity, and keep your metabolism healthy.

Studies show that moving your body after eating may be even more effective for metabolism than exercising before a meal, likely because your muscles are using the glucose already in your bloodstream for energy.

Even a 10-minute walk around the block counts.
